Shahnaz, Ahvaz, Iran

“When I cook, I remember my best times”

Shahnaz is a devoted home cook from Ahvaz, a big city in the south of Iran. She believes food is important because it’s made from your hands, a beautiful act of love and intimacy. Carrying her heart on her sleeves, Shahnaz is often found catering for lively crowds of 20 or more family and friends, baking fresh bread daily in her traditional tandoor oven! Married at a young age, Shahnaz’s mother-in-law taught her how to cook, and she’s been cooking ever since, spreading her Persian cuisine and beautiful stories to all she meets.  Her food is filled with memories. Memories of sitting next to her sisters and parents in her family home and enjoying every meal together. Memories of gathering with other women to make Kobeh while they wait for their children to finish school. Memories of her own childhood school lunches, and the little bowl and spoon she used to carry daily. For Shahnaz, cooking is truly her happy place, bringing all her best times back to life.
