When Huda speaks of Palestine, she speaks of her kitchen, sitting crossed legged on the floor, watching her Teta’s soft wrinkled hands kneading dough for the family. She speaks of her father, and his lesson in standing proud of who she is, her history, her people. She speaks of the souk, a marketplace filling the streets with bundles of fresh oranges, the smell of freshly baked bread lingering in the air. She speaks of the musician whose fingers dance across strings, the mountains of spices each bearing a different colour, the familiar chaos, the noise of so many voices blending into one, a song sung by the market itself.

And now, it is our honour to invite you to Sounds of the Souk, an intimate journey to Huda’s home, held in our Fitzroy North space. Across two heartfelt hours, you’ll be immersed in our marketplace, wandering through the smells, sights, flavours and sounds of Huda’s memories. Think aromatic spices, henna with Huda’s daughter, traditional melodies, a chai circle and plenty of Zeit Za’atar Zeytoon. In the midst of it all, you’ll partake in a one hour cooking workshop with Huda herself, where together, you’ll learn to make her Palestinian Yafeweya, and famous Knafeh, layered with stories and songs from her childhood.
