A meaningful conversation + a shared feast
“For refugees, it's very rare that we influence the narrative in which we are seen. This event is an opportunity for us to tell our own stories.”
Our table at Free to Feed is a tapestry of stories and traditions, a space for sharing celebrations and struggles, for conversations that shine a light on journeys of displacement.
For two beautiful evenings, we invite you to join us at these communal tables, in our light-filled Fitzroy North home. Together, we’ll bear witness to truly heartfelt discussions taking place between Bahaa, Rana and Somaya (all cooking instructors at Free to Feed), each speaking from lived experience. In true Free to Feed style, amidst these conversations, we’ll also enjoy a shared feast filled with all our favourite dishes, celebrating the melting pot of cultures that have shaped every bite.
Bring your loved ones, and join us for a truly special evening - you’re all welcome at our table.

Bahaa is a refugee from Aleppo, forced to leave his home, dreaming of a future in which his commute to work would be one without dodging snipers’ bullets. Incredibly skilled in so many fields, Bahaa pours his heart into his own project, ‘Refugee Thoughts’, where he shares everyday stories and perspectives to help others better understand the refugee experience. His hope is to shift the narrative towards not just Syrians, but all displaced people, so that one day soon, future generations will be welcomed with open arms wherever they may land.
In Iraq, Rana worked as an emergency doctor, later fleeing her home in search of safety for her and her family. Both inspiring and strong, Rana has learned that true belonging comes from within. Her stories are of Baghdad during peacetime, describing a cosmopolitan city that’s as chaotic as it is beautiful – a city of bustling bazaars and springtime picnics. Rana hopes that through her words, she can paint a brighter picture of her home and her heritage.
Somaya arrived to Australia from Palestine less than a year ago, bringing with her sacred recipes and stories from her beloved Gaza. To Somaya, having people understand the rich heritage of her country is very important - the resilience, the culture, the life that is still happening in Palestine, day in, day out. Despite its hardships, Somaya remains hopeful for Gaza’s future.
