BEYOND ARRIVAL
A conversation on starting over, and the never-ending struggle as refugees navigating a new beginning
Our table at Free to Feed is a tapestry of stories and traditions, a space for sharing celebrations and struggles, for conversations that shine a light on journeys of migration and displacement.
On Friday 18th October, we invite you to join us at these communal tables, in our beautiful Fitzroy North home. Together, we’ll bear witness to a truly heartfelt discussion taking place between Bahaa and Thae (both part of the Free to Feed team), as they speak from lived experience on what it means to start over in a new country, and the never-ending struggle navigating perspectives and systems.
In true Free to Feed style, amidst these conversations, we’ll also enjoy a shared pescatarian feast filled with all our favourite dishes, celebrating the melting pot of cultures that have shaped every bite.
Bring your loved ones, and join us for a truly special evening - you’re all welcome at our tables xo

Thae is a Karen woman from Burma, undertaking a PHD on a topic she knows all too well: struggles to access higher education programs for displaced peoples. When she was just 15 years old, Thae’s life changed overnight, from an everyday high school student to a refugee living in a camp on the Thai-Burma border. Her story is one of incredible resilience in the face of hopelessness, and shines a light on how education can be the key to our survival - in her case, for her getting out of the camp she spent half her life in.
"I am so excited about this event because I get to share not only my personal lived experience journey but also to discuss the transformative power of education for young people from displaced communities. Education truly holds the key to unlocking a world of boundless opportunities!"Bahaa is a refugee from Aleppo, forced to leave his home too, dreaming of a future in which his commute to work would be one without dodging snipers’ bullets. Incredibly skilled in so many fields, Bahaa pours his heart into his own project, ‘Refugee Thoughts’, where he shares everyday stories and perspectives to help others better understand the refugee experience. His hope is to shift the narrative towards not just Syrians, but all displaced people, so that one day soon, future generations will be welcomed with open arms wherever they may land.
"I'm excited to be hosting this event because for refugees, it's very rare that we influence the narrative in which we are seen. This event is an opportunity for us to tell our own stories.I'm hoping that attendees can gain insights into the refugee journey, how diverse it is, how it could be any of them, and how it makes these humans a highly valuable addition to host communities. -
