Niro’s Chicken Curry

It’s a small symbol of my culture.

I talk through memories and live
for the promise of a future.

Turn on the flame and feel the heat
of grandmother’s claypot over coals.

Slice aromatic garlic while pop! pop! pop! Mustard seeds are ready. 

Tear leaves from the curry tree and see me walking barefoot on dirt roads.

Pull back metal tin lids but smell freshly grated coconut. We knocked it from the tree and made milk right there.

Everywhere you see water vegetables,
roll up your cuffs and they’re yours.

We can take flour from the jar.
But I remember the sack of fresh rice
on the kitchen floor.

Husk, mill, grind.
